THE SNCF IN MY CITY

Emblazoned with local colours

The cities pull into the station

08/09/18

The SNCF and French Senate are holding a joint exhibition of the city arms that have been emblazoned on trains over the years. Come on down and show your colours...

A hundred coats of arms from the SNCF's old stores have been put on display to mark the company's 70th anniversary. It's a new exhibition in the Jardin du Luxembourg, in partnership with the French Senate, from 20 September onwards.

Forward thinking from the 1970s. The idea, back then, was to get cities and regions to sponsor trains, and have their logo or arms emblazoned on the side of the train. It was the start of a long tradition that continues to this day. The exhibition celebrates 40 years of partnership between the railways and the French cities they serve.

Come on down to Jardin du Luxembourg. Check out these cast iron crests that have travelled all over France and Europe. You can find out how they were made and see photos of the inauguration of locomotives proudly bearing their coats of arms. Parents can find out about heraldry and how coats of arms were designed, and kids can have a go at our giant board game.

Practicalities.'Quand les villes entrent en gare'. Exhibition at Jardin du Luxembourg, allée Eugène Delacroix, Paris. From 20 September to 26 October 2008, every day from 7:30am to 7:15pm, free of charge.
