On 19 December, the Perthus tunnel was opened to passengers. Figueres is now just 5hrs 27 mins from Paris by TGV. Weekend in Spain anyone?
Southern Europe just got closer
We've moved mountains to connect France and Spain. Actually, we've gone underneath them through the Perthus tunnel - two separate tubes that are 8.3 km long, 7.3 km of which is in France. The tunnel has made high-speed services between Perpignan and Figueres possible, but that's just the start of it. This section is part of the ambitious project for a high-speed line from Madrid to the French border via Barcelona which is a key focus for the European networks.
Spain is just a train ride away!
From 19 December, the SNCF will be running two return services a day with fares starting at €54.50**. Trains will stop at Nîmes, Montpellier, Narbonne and Perpignan on their way from Paris Gare de Lyon to Figueres, where Salvador Dali was born.
The beaches, coves and unusual plant-life in the botanical gardens all around this town provide an insight into the painter's inspirations. There's something for everyone, whether you're looking to chill, party or explore!
Keep going
It's easy to catch a connecting train for other Spanish destinations from one of the conveniently located platforms. You can be in Barcelona in just 1hr 40 mins! Follow your whims to the range of towns with connections from this hub - Valencia, Zaragoza, Madrid, Seville and many more.
