In October 2008, a series-produced double-decker train was used for two weeks of testing on the LGV Est high-speed line. Tests showed that on track of this quality, travel comfort at 360 kph is acceptable. However, various issues need some further work, in particular to reduce noise and the resistance to the train's travel in order to minimise energy consumption and optimise comfort for standing passengers. The 2007 world record (of 574.8 kph on this same line) was part of a process of dealing with certain problems such as current collection at high speeds and braking. Speeds of 360 kph will soon be required when a new Paris-Lyon line is created - the existing line has already reached saturation. The SNCF is suggesting a new more westerly route via Clermont-Ferrand, with a terminus at Paris-Austerlitz. Train speeds of 360 kph are required to ensure the route is efficient and effective and meets the high standards of the current line. |
