A neural network

experts, network

10/08/26

The SNCF is creating a network of expert thinkers to expand our expertise and promote our image around the world. They currently number 92, but by 2012 they will be 400-strong.

Say "Synapses". That's the name of the first network of SNCF scientific and technical experts, which was established in November 2009. Of the 4,000 scientists and technicians within the SNCF, 123 applied to join the first 'batch' of recruits and 92 were selected. That's a pretty high proportion, given the demanding requirements of the SNCF selection panel. They had to have a high level of expertise in a discipline at the heart of the SNCF's strategy. We were looking to identify the high flyers, the key players that are key for our development and who we don't want to let go.

Four levels. The "incubator" level is for young PhD students or engineering graduates who want to specialise in a particular subject. Level II is for more mature experts with some in-depth skills. Level III features people who are in some way leaders in their field. Level IV is for the real visionaries who can tell you what's going to be happening in 15 years time, without even pausing to think.

What's their role? First and foremost, we want them to share their knowledge - to train up juniors, write reference documents, lead and coordinate conferences and partnerships - all to ensure that the SNCF stays ahead of the game. But that's not all... They are also required to get directly involved in our in-house research programmes, to put forward projects and help the SNCF remain on the cutting edge of forward thinking. These are the key criteria. All the experts have a three-year appraisal at which their status as a Synapses expert will be reviewed.

Preferential treatment. The SNCF offers time, state-of-the-art tools like the Innovation & Research 2.0 social network, training, special events such as summer schools and appropriate levels of remuneration and reward. With ever-increasing competition and globalisation in the railway market, the SNCF wants to make sure its neural network is well-connected and performing well.

Next please! 93 more applicants have applied to join the second 'batch' this autumn. Watch this space...
