18 Directors set the SNCF's policy direction and work on key issues in smaller committees.

18 Directors: 7 represent the French government, 3 are selected for their knowledge of rail transport issues, 6 represent the company's employees and 2 represent customers (one for passengers and one for freight shippers).

Their term of office is for 5 years (renewable twice). Ordinary Board meetings are held at least 10 times a year and smaller committees meet to work on key issues - Auditing and Risks Committee, Strategic Committee, Contracts Committee, Freight Committee and Passenger Transport Committee.
